In the Geranium restaurant, located in an unusual location on the eighth floor of the Danish national football stadium, serves seasonal, meat-free Scandinavian cuisine. The restaurant is open only four days a week, a choice made by Chef Rasmus Kofoed and co-owner Soren Ledet to maintain a work-life balance.
The lavish ceremony took place on the hottest day of the year in the UK, in London's old Billingsgate, a Victorian building that was once the world's largest fish market. The event was hosted by Hollywood actor and host Stanley Tucci.
Restaurants are allowed to receive the main prize of the award only once, after which they are included in a separate nomination “Best of the Best”. Among the elite are last year's Copenhagen winner Geranium Noma, as well as New York's Eleven Madison Park, The Fat Duck from the suburbs of London, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy and Mirazur in Menton, France.
South American restaurants have also succeeded. In Lima, Peru, Central, with chefs Virgilio Martinez and his wife Pia Leon, came in second, while Maido, which serves Japanese-Peruvian fusion, came in 11th.
Brazil's Casa do Porco, a feast of pork dishes, climbed 10 positions to 7th.
Spain's results this year remain “on par”. Barcelona's Disfrutar took 3rd place, Madrid's Diverxo moved up to fourth, and Asador Etxebarri in Larrabetzu, where all dishes, even desserts, are grilled, came in sixth.
Mexico City is represented by fifth-place Pujol, this year's Best North American Restaurant, and Quintonil, up from last year's 27th place to 9th.
Italian Lido 84 and Le Calandre also moved up the rankings this year. Uliassi from the Italian region of Senigallia ranked 12th.
The best Asian restaurant appears only at number 20 restaurant. And he won the Den restaurant in Tokyo.
In the 20 years of the award's existence, no establishment outside of Europe or North America has ever won the “50 Best Restaurants in the World” award. All winners are currently concentrated in 6 countries: Spain, USA, UK, Denmark, Italy and France.
