It is known that the project was partially implemented back in 2020 – then buses and trams were made free on weekends. In 2021, fares have been completely abolished for young people under 18 and seniors over 65. And now they plan to make it free for everyone, both residents and tourists.
Similar schemes are already operating in 39 regions of France, but Montpellier is the largest of the cities planning to implement such a project. Local authorities hope that this will help achieve zero emissions and make Montpellier more environmentally friendly and accessible to people.
