The system is designed to carry out preliminary checks of persons intending to enter the EU territory. The main task of the system is to increase the internal security of the EU countries and provide for illegal migration.

To come to any EU country, citizens of other countries (having a visa-free regime) will have to pre-authorize in the ETAIS system online and pay 7€ for 3 years.

The launch of the system was planned for 2021, then it was postponed to November 2023. But given the current global circumstances, the European Union has decided to postpone the start date of the ETAIS travel information system to 2024.

However, there is another system of entry and exit ESS, which provides for more stringent biometric checks of travelers. The start of this system has been moved from May to the end of 2023.
